2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a mix of a little bit of 1980s eight-bit styling and some drastically impressive new-era electrification. The Ioniq 5 sparkles as a fast-charging SUV with remarkable driving range. The lineup houses a 168-hp, single-motor, rear-wheel-drive with an EPA estimate of 220 miles range; up to a 320-hp, all-wheel-drive, dual-motor set up with an estimated 266 miles of range. While the big-range, single-motor, rear-drive model with 303 miles is among the longest-driving EVs sold today for just under $60,000. The 350-kW DC fast-charging capability is the real deal. Though, enabling charging speeds as quick as those is only offered by far more expensive and luxurious EVs such as the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air. Inside, there’s plenty of room, with generous rear-passenger space than both the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4. With a variety of pricing and range options, this EV makes a compelling choice.

What’s New?

As the Ioniq 5 just launched last year, Hyundai makes minimal equipment changes, but enough to bump its EPA-rating higher in a few areas. All-wheel drive variants now get an EPA-estimated 266 miles of range, up from last year’s 256-mile rating. They also now have slightly higher MPGe ratings. A battery heating system and preconditioning function are now standard as well. Finally, the maximum tow rating for SEL and Limited models is up to 2300 pounds.

Battery & Performance

The Ioniq 5 features an electric-only powertrain that’s available in multiple versions. The standard-range battery is mated with a single, rear-mounted electric motor pumping out 168-hp. While, the longer-range battery, with a rear-drive setup, produces 225-hp and 258-pound-feet of torque. Hyundai claims this will rocket the Ioniq 5 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. However, the AWD is the most powerful among them all, with 320-hp and a notable 446-pound-feet, and faster, too.

It propelled to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds during testing. The EV has its way of smoothness on a variety of road surfaces, and its wide-for-an-EV tires combined with a low center of gravity make it athletic while maneuvering. With the standard 58.0-kWh battery pack, the Ioniq 5 is estimated to provide 220 miles of range. The larger 77.4-kWh pack is rated at 266 miles with dual motors and 303 miles with a single motor. For the charging part, Hyundai claims that the large battery can be refilled from 10-80% in around 18 minutes when plugged into a DC fast charger. It can also add 68 miles in about five minutes.
